Artist statement

Jennie Du is a Singapore-based figurative artist whose work explores the relationship between time, memory, and human presence.

 

Working primarily in oil and charcoal, she creates portraits that exist between observation and remembrance. Rather than documenting appearance, her paintings seek to preserve the emotional weight of a moment

—those quiet intervals in which love is felt most deeply, yet often passes unnoticed.

 

Central to her practice is the belief that memory is never fixed.

It softens, edits, and transforms experience, allowing ordinary moments to acquire unexpected significance. Through restrained compositions and an intimate treatment of light, gesture, and space, her work reflects on how relationships continue to exist long after a moment has disappeared.

 

Motherhood has profoundly shaped the direction of her practice.

The experience of raising children revealed the fragile rhythm of time: every embrace becomes shorter, every farewell more familiar.

This ongoing awareness forms the foundation of Before She Outgrows Me, a long-term series that considers childhood not simply as a stage of life, but as a shared human memory that quietly connects generations.

 

While rooted in the traditions of figurative painting, Jennie’s work is less concerned with likeness than with emotional presence. Her paintings invite viewers to slow down, to look again, and to reflect on the moments that have shaped their own lives.
